Wanneer deze vlinder zijn vleugels sluit, transformeert hij volledig: de onderzijde van de vleugels imiteert een dood blad met verbluffende precisie, compleet met 'nerven', 'schimmelplekken' en zelfs een 'steel' gevormd door de staarten van de achtervleugels. Deze camouflage is zo overtuigend dat de vlinder vrijwel onzichtbaar wordt tussen gevallen bladeren op de bosbodem.
Het contrast tussen de twee kanten van de vlinder is dramatisch. Terwijl de onderzijde eruitziet als een verweerd blad in bruintinten, tonen de bovenzijden van de vleugels een explosie van kleur: diep oranje, blauw en zwart. The Kallima inachus, also known as the Dead Leaf Butterfly, is a master of disguise. When this butterfly closes its wings, it completely transforms: the underside of the wings mimics a dead leaf with stunning precision, complete with 'veins', 'fungal spots', and even a 'stem' formed by the tails of the hindwings. This camouflage is so convincing that the butterfly becomes virtually invisible among fallen leaves on the forest floor.
The contrast between the two sides of the butterfly is dramatic. While the underside resembles a weathered leaf in brown tones, the upper sides of the wings display an explosion of color: deep orange, blue, and black.
