Deze vlinder kenmerkt zich door zijn opvallende iriserende groene kleur op de bovenzijde van de vleugels. Deze kleur ontstaat door structurele kleuring: microscopisch gestructureerde oppervlakken verstoren het zichtbare licht. Rijen microscopische kommetjes reflecteren geel licht direct en blauw licht vanaf de zijkanten, wat de karakteristieke groene kleur creëert. De onderzijde vertoont een gedempter patroon met bruine en zwarte tinten.
De soort is actief in het bladerdak van tropische regenwouden en vertoont een krachtig, glijdend vlieggedrag. Mannetjes zijn territoriaal en patrouilleren regelmatig langs vaste routes. De rupsen voeden zich met bladeren van citrusplanten (Rutaceae). De vlinder heeft een spanwijdte van 8 tot 10 cm en vliegt het hele jaar door in zijn natuurlijke leefgebied.
