Over Scolopendra piceoflava
Scolopendra piceoflava behoort tot de familie Scolopendridae en is een van de grotere soorten binnen het geslacht Scolopendra. De soort komt voor in delen van Zuidoost-Azië en leeft in vochtige, tropische omgevingen zoals bosbodem, onder stenen en in rottend hout.
Duizendpoten van het geslacht Scolopendra zijn actieve roofdieren. Ze jagen op insecten, spinnen, kleine hagedissen, kikkers en soms kleine knaagdieren. De prooi wordt gevangen met de krachtige, giftige forcipules — aangepaste voorpoten die direct achter de kop zijn geplaatst en waarmee gif wordt ingespoten. Het gif is krachtig genoeg om prooien snel te immobiliseren.
Scolopendra-soorten zijn nachtactief en solitair. Ze zijn gevoelig voor uitdroging en zoeken overdag beschutting op vochtige plaatsen. Ondanks hun naam hebben duizendpoten geen duizend poten: afhankelijk van de soort hebben ze tussen de 30 en 354 poten, altijd een oneven aantal paar.

Scolopendra piceoflava belongs to the family Scolopendridae and is one of the larger species within the genus Scolopendra. The species occurs in parts of Southeast Asia and inhabits moist, tropical environments such as forest floors, under rocks, and in rotting wood.
Centipedes of the genus Scolopendra are active predators. They hunt insects, spiders, small lizards, frogs, and occasionally small rodents. Prey is captured using the powerful, venomous forcipules — modified front legs located directly behind the head, used to inject venom. The venom is potent enough to immobilize prey rapidly.
Scolopendra species are nocturnal and solitary. They are sensitive to dehydration and seek shelter in moist locations during the day. Despite their name, centipedes do not have a thousand legs: depending on the species, they have between 30 and 354 legs, always an odd number of pairs.
