De Charaxes kahldeni behoort tot de familie van de Nymphalidae en komt van nature voor in de tropische regenwouden van Centraal-Afrika. Deze soort staat bekend om zijn opvallende kleurpatroon met tinten van bruin, wit en soms oranje op de bovenzijde van de vleugels. De onderzijde vertoont een complexer patroon dat dient als camouflage wanneer de vlinder rust met gesloten vleugels.
Charaxes-vlinders staan bekend om hun krachtige en snelle vlieggedrag. In tegenstelling tot veel andere vlinders die nectar drinken, voeden Charaxes-soorten zich voornamelijk met rottend fruit, boomsappen en zelfs dierlijke uitwerpselen. De naam komt van het Griekse woord 'amethystos', wat 'niet dronken' betekent. In de oudheid geloofde men dat amethist bescherming bood tegen dronkenschap. Ze legde de steen onder hun tong terwijl ze wijn dronken om zo minder snel dronken te worden.
