Distantalna splendida (cicade) – zwarte kader met witte achtergrond
Distantalna splendida is een grote cicade uit Zuid- en Zuidoost-Azië met een opvallend vleugelpatroon: diep gepigmenteerde zones afgewisseld met hyaline — doorzichtige — vleugelgebieden die het licht op een bijzondere manier doorlaten. In dit zwart minimalistisch kader met witte achtergrond komen zowel de kleuren als de transparante vleugelstructuur volledig tot hun recht.
De soort was lange tijd bekend onder de naam Tosena splendida, maar werd na taxonomische herziening ondergebracht in het geslacht Distantalna. Een belangrijk onderscheidend kenmerk tussen beide geslachten is precies de aanwezigheid van die hyaline vleugelzones: Tosena-soorten missen deze doorzichtige gebieden, terwijl ze bij Distantalna een kenmerkend onderdeel zijn van het vleugelpatroon. Omdat splendida deze zones wel bezit, werd de soort herplaatst in Distantalna.
Cicaden behoren tot de orde Hemiptera en zijn wereldwijd bekend om hun karakteristieke geluid. Mannetjes produceren dit met behulp van tymbalen — trillende membranen aan het achterlijf — om vrouwtjes aan te trekken. Het geluid van sommige soorten kan oplopen tot meer dan 100 decibel. De larven leven ondergronds en voeden zich met plantenwortels, soms gedurende meerdere jaren, voordat ze als volwassen insect aan de oppervlakte komen.

Distantalna splendida (Cicada) – Black Frame with White Background
Distantalna splendida is a large cicada from South and Southeast Asia with a striking wing pattern: deeply pigmented zones alternating with hyaline — transparent — wing areas that allow light to pass through in a distinctive way. In this black minimalist frame with a white background, both the colors and the transparent wing structure are fully on display.
The species was long known under the name Tosena splendida, but was reclassified into the genus Distantalna following taxonomic revision. A key distinguishing feature between the two genera is precisely the presence of these hyaline wing zones: Tosena species lack these transparent areas, while in Distantalna they are a characteristic part of the wing pattern. Because splendida possesses these zones, the species was reassigned to Distantalna.
Cicadas belong to the order Hemiptera and are known worldwide for their characteristic sound. Males produce this using tymbals — vibrating membranes on the abdomen — to attract females. The sound of some species can exceed 100 decibels. The larvae live underground and feed on plant roots, sometimes for several years, before emerging as adults.
