Over Lethocerus indicus

Lethocerus indicus (Giant Water Bug) – Botanical Dome with Pond Scene

This botanical dome contains a carefully composed miniature pond in which Lethocerus indicus, better known as the giant water bug, is placed at the center. The pond scene is built up using blue-tinted epoxy resin that mimics still water, finished with mosses, pebbles, and aquatic plants. The combination of natural materials and the insect creates a realistic representation of its natural habitat.

About Lethocerus indicus

Lethocerus indicus belongs to the family Belostomatidae and is one of the largest aquatic insects in the world. The species is naturally found in parts of South and Southeast Asia, including India, Thailand, and Vietnam. It inhabits still or slow-moving freshwater environments such as ponds, marshes, and rice paddies.

The giant water bug is an active predatory insect. Using its powerful forelegs, it seizes its prey, then pierces it with its rostrum and extracts the body fluids. Its diet includes small fish, frogs, and water snails. Adult specimens are also capable fliers, allowing them to disperse easily to new bodies of water.

Within the family Belostomatidae, remarkable brooding behavior occurs. In some related species, the male carries and guards the eggs deposited on his back by the female until they hatch. This behavior makes the group biologically distinctive within the insect world.

In various parts of Southeast Asia, particularly in Thailand, the giant water bug is also traditionally used as a food source and is considered a local delicacy.
