Mormolyce phyllodes (vioolkever) – Zwarte kader met witte achtergrond
Er zijn weinig insecten waarvan de lichaamsvorm zo onmiddellijk herkenbaar is als die van Mormolyce phyllodes. Het sterk afgeplatte, breed uitlopende halsschild en de langwerpige romp geven de vioolkever een silhouet dat zijn naam volledig rechtvaardigt. Tegen de witte achtergrond van deze zwarte kader tekent die vorm zich scherp af — zonder afleiding, enkel het insect.
De vioolkever behoort tot de familie Carabidae en leeft in de vochtige tropische bossen van Sumatra, Java en het Maleisisch schiereiland. De afgeplatte lichaamsbouw is geen toeval: de soort leeft onder boomschors en in nauwe spleten van bomen, waar alleen een uitzonderlijk plat lichaam bewegingsvrijheid biedt. Mormolyce phyllodes is een nachtactief roofdier dat zich voedt met andere insecten en kleine ongewervelden.
Door zijn opvallende verschijning is de vioolkever een geliefde soort onder entomologen en verzamelaars wereldwijd.

Few insects have a body shape as immediately recognizable as that of Mormolyce phyllodes. The strongly flattened, broadly expanded pronotum and elongated body give the violin beetle a silhouette that fully justifies its name. Against the white background of this black frame, that form stands out sharply — no distractions, just the insect.
The violin beetle belongs to the family Carabidae and inhabits the moist tropical forests of Sumatra, Java, and the Malay Peninsula. Its flattened body is no coincidence: the species lives under tree bark and in narrow crevices of trees, where only an exceptionally flat body allows freedom of movement. Mormolyce phyllodes is a nocturnal predator that feeds on other insects and small invertebrates.
Due to its striking appearance, the violin beetle is a prized species among entomologists and collectors worldwide.
