Waar het mannetje van Phyllium pulchrifolium smal en vliegend is, is het vrouwtje breed, zwaar en bijna perfect bladachtig. Dit exemplaar, afkomstig uit West-Java, toont de camouflage van de soort op zijn meest overtuigend: de brede, afgeplatte romp met bladnerven, de onregelmatige randen en de groene tinten maken het onderscheid tussen insect en blad vrijwel onmogelijk.
Phyllium pulchrifolium behoort tot de familie Phylliidae en de orde Phasmatodea. Vrouwtjes zijn aanzienlijk groter dan mannetjes en hebben een breder, meer uitgesproken bladachtig lichaam. In tegenstelling tot mannetjes zijn vrouwtjes niet in staat te vliegen — hun vleugels zijn gereduceerd en dienen enkel als extra camouflage-element. De soort leeft in de tropische bossen van West-Java, waar ze overdag vrijwel onzichtbaar zijn tussen het bladerdek.
Vrouwtjes van wandelende bladeren zijn bij verzamelaars meer gewild dan mannetjes vanwege hun grotere formaat en de meer uitgesproken bladgelijkenis. De soort kan zich bovendien voortplanten via parthenogenese — vrouwtjes zijn in staat eieren te leggen zonder bevruchting door een mannetje.

Where the male of Phyllium pulchrifolium is slim and capable of flight, the female is broad, heavy, and almost perfectly leaf-like. This specimen, originating from West Java, displays the species’ camouflage at its most convincing: the wide, flattened body with leaf veins, irregular edges, and green tones make the distinction between insect and leaf nearly impossible.
Phyllium pulchrifolium belongs to the family Phylliidae and the order Phasmatodea. Females are considerably larger than males and have a broader, more pronounced leaf-like body. Unlike males, females are unable to fly — their wings are reduced and serve only as an additional camouflage element. The species inhabits the tropical forests of West Java, where they are virtually invisible among the foliage during the day.
Female leaf insects are more sought after by collectors than males due to their larger size and more pronounced leaf resemblance. The species is also capable of reproducing through parthenogenesis — females are able to lay eggs without fertilization by a male.
