De atlasvlinder behoort tot de grootste nachtvlinders ter wereld. Het afweermechanisme van de Attacus atlas is duidelijk zichtbaar aan de vleugelpunten. Met enige verbeelding lijken deze op de kop van een slang, wat heeft geleid tot de naam slangenkopvlinder of snake head moth. Deze visuele misleiding kan roofdieren afschrikken. Ondanks zijn grote formaat is de atlasvlinder geen behendige vlieger.
