Cyrestis thyonneus & Cyrestis acillia (kaartenvlinders) – zwarte kader met witte achtergrond
De vleugels van Cyrestis thyonneus en Cyrestis acillia hebben een crème tot lichtbeige basiskleur, doorkruist door een fijn netwerk van dunne bruine en oranje lijnen — een patroon dat zo sterk lijkt op de lijnen van een oude landkaart dat de soorten in het Engels map butterflies worden genoemd. In dit zwart minimalistisch kader met witte achtergrond komt dat warme lijnwerk bijzonder goed tot zijn recht.
Beide soorten behoren tot het geslacht Cyrestis (familie Nymphalidae, onderfamilie Cyrestinae) en zijn afkomstig uit Sulawesi, een van de meest biodivers rijke eilanden van Indonesië. De vlinders leven in tropische bossen en zijn overdag actief. Ze worden vaak waargenomen terwijl ze met gespreide vleugels op bladeren of de grond rusten — een gedrag dat het kaartpatroon op de vleugels volledig zichtbaar maakt.

The wings of Cyrestis thyonneus and Cyrestis acillia have a cream to light beige base color, crossed by a fine network of thin brown and orange lines — a pattern so reminiscent of the lines on an old map that the species are commonly known in English as map butterflies. In this black minimalist frame with a white background, that warm linework is shown to great effect.
Both species belong to the genus Cyrestis (family Nymphalidae, subfamily Cyrestinae) and originate from Sulawesi, one of Indonesia’s most biodiverse islands. The butterflies inhabit tropical forests and are active during the day. They are often observed resting with wings spread flat on leaves or the ground — a behavior that makes the map-like pattern on the wings fully visible.
Cyrestis thyonneus and Cyrestis acillia closely resemble each other but can be distinguished by subtle differences in the line patterns and the distribution of markings on the fore- and hindwings. Presenting both species together makes those differences directly comparable.
