Cicades behoren tot de meest morfologisch gevarieerde insectengroepen ter wereld. Waar de meeste dieren evolueren naar efficiëntie, lijken sommige soorten binnen de Membracidae te evolueren naar het buitengewone. De functie van die uitsteeksels is nog altijd niet volledig begrepen — camouflage, afschrikking, of iets heel anders.
