Lethocerus indicus is een actief roofinsect. Met zijn krachtige voorpoten grijpt hij zijn prooi vast, waarna hij deze met zijn steeksnuit doorboort en de lichaamsvloeistoffen opzuigt. Het dieet bestaat onder meer uit kleine vissen, kikkers en waterslakken. Volwassen exemplaren zijn goede vliegers en kunnen zo nieuwe watergebieden koloniseren.
Binnen de familie Belostomatidae komt bijzonder broedgedrag voor. Bij sommige verwante soorten bewaakt het mannetje de eitjes die het vrouwtje op zijn rug heeft afgezet totdat ze uitkomen. In delen van Zuidoost-Azië, met name in Thailand, wordt de soort traditioneel gebruikt als voedingsbron en geldt hij als een lokale delicatesse.
