De mangopijlstaart behoort tot de familie Sphingidae en komt voor in Zuid- en Zuidoost-Azië, waaronder India, Sri Lanka, Thailand en Indonesië. De soort is herkenbaar aan zijn olijfgroene tot bruine voorvleugels met fijne donkere streping en de roze tot oranje achtervleugels met donkere rand. Met een spanwijdte van ongeveer 80 tot 100 millimeter is het een middelgrote tot grote vertegenwoordiger van de pijlstaartmotten.
Amplypterus panopus is nachtactief en staat bekend om zijn uitzonderlijke vliegvermogen. Net als andere Sphingidae is de soort in staat om zwevend te vliegen terwijl hij met zijn lange roltong nectar opneemt uit bloemen. De larven voeden zich met bladeren van mangobomen (Mangifera indica) en verwante soorten uit de familie Anacardiaceae — vandaar de naam mangopijlstaart.

The species is recognizable by its olive-green to brown forewings with fine dark streaking and pink to orange hindwings with a dark border. With a wingspan of approximately 80 to 100 millimeters, it is a medium to large representative of the hawkmoths.
Amplypterus panopus is nocturnal and known for its exceptional flight capabilities. Like other Sphingidae, the species is able to hover while feeding on nectar from flowers using its long proboscis. The larvae feed on the leaves of mango trees (Mangifera indica) and related species from the family Anacardiaceae — hence the common name mango hawkmoth.
