Twee exemplaren van Moduza procris tonen in één natuurhistorische presentatie zowel de boven- als de onderzijde van de vleugels. De warme bruin- en oranjetinten aan de bovenzijde contrasteren met het fijnere patroon in crème, bruin en grijsgroen aan de onderzijde. De vlinders zijn geplaatst in een donkere kader met witte achtergrond, passe-partout en een handgeschreven determinatielabel.
Over Moduza procris
Moduza procris, in het Engels bekend als de Commander, behoort tot de familie Nymphalidae. De soort leeft in Zuid- en Zuidoost-Azië en wordt vooral aangetroffen langs bosranden, open plekken en zonnige paden. De brede vleugels ondersteunen een krachtige vlucht waarin snelle vleugelslagen worden afgewisseld met glijvluchten.
Mannetjes patrouilleren geregeld langs vaste vliegroutes en verdedigen zonnige rustplaatsen tegen soortgenoten. Ze nemen ook mineralen op uit vochtige bodem. De rupsen voeden zich met planten uit de sterbladigenfamilie (Rubiaceae), waaronder soorten van het geslacht Mussaenda. Het verschil tussen de geslachten is beperkt; vrouwtjes zijn doorgaans wat groter, terwijl de vleugeltekening grotendeels overeenkomt.
De boven- en onderzijde verschillen sterk in uitstraling. De contrastrijke bovenzijde is opvallend tijdens de vlucht, terwijl de meer gedempte tekening aan de onderzijde minder opvalt wanneer de vleugels gesloten zijn.

About Moduza procris
Moduza procris, commonly known as the Commander, belongs to the family Nymphalidae. The species occurs across South and Southeast Asia, particularly along forest edges, clearings and sunny paths. Its broad wings support a powerful flight in which rapid wingbeats alternate with gliding.
Males regularly patrol established flight routes and defend sunny resting places against other males. They also obtain minerals from damp ground. The caterpillars feed on plants in the coffee family (Rubiaceae), including species of Mussaenda. Sexual dimorphism is limited; females are generally somewhat larger, while the wing pattern remains broadly similar.
The upper side and underside differ markedly in appearance. The contrasting upper side is conspicuous in flight, while the more subdued pattern underneath is less noticeable when the wings are closed.
