Theretra nessus is een middelgrote pijlstaartmot met een spanwijdte van ongeveer 65 tot 80 millimeter. De voorvleugels zijn olijfbruin tot grijsbruin met een fijn patroon van donkere strepen. De achtervleugels zijn roze tot oranje met een donkere rand — een kleurcontrast dat pas zichtbaar wordt wanneer de mot de vleugels spreidt of in vlucht is.
De soort is nachtactief en vliegt snel en doelgericht. Pijlstaartmotten zijn in staat om zwevend te vliegen terwijl ze met hun lange roltong nectar opnemen uit bloemen — een techniek die ze gemeen hebben met kolibries. De vleugelslag is zo snel dat ze in vlucht nauwelijks te onderscheiden zijn van kleine vogels of vleermuizen.
De larven van Theretra nessus voeden zich met planten uit de familie Vitaceae (wijnstokfamilie) en Araliaceae. De volwassen mot beschikt niet over ontwikkelde monddelen voor vast voedsel en leeft uitsluitend van nectar.
